ARTIST IN RESIDENCE – LERA KELEMEN
29.07-06.09.2020
Lera Kelemen (b. 1994) is an artist and sound designer from Timișoara, Romania. Her practice has an interdisciplinary approach, focusing on sound and publication through which she interrogates the notions of space, usership, language and the dynamics of the built environment on the way we define our narratives. She has participated in a number of projects including collaborations with Simultan Festival, Kunsthalle Bega and Art Encounters.
For the residency, she explored the design of semi-circular structures that are used as a metaphor for memory palaces. Quoting Giulio Camillo’s Memory Amphitheatre (Teatro della Memoria), the semicircular space represents the organisation of human knowledge in physical space, filled with symbols. The round shape generates a fluid movement and plays a role in the sonic experience as well, defining the optimum position for the listener to perceive the stereo image. The installation will be used as a physical support to create a connection between textual and sonic signs. Memmonade is the last work from Lera Kelemen, it was visible at Niki during Zinnober 2020.
Lera’s stay is the beginning of an exchange residency program from Art Encounters and Niki Residency.
